Sophie McCafferty

You can always find Sophie spending time with her community, growing, preparing and sharing food. Her passion for feminist agroecology is a driving factor in her life. She finds the connection between the social and environmental aspects of agriculture one of the most promising hopes for advancing sustainability and wellbeing into the future. Her studies and career have enabled her to work in hyper-local to international settings, and she is grateful for all the lessons each person has shared with her along the way. People keep her motivated and excited to always learn and grow. When she hasn’t got her hands in the soil you can find Sophie walking in the forest, reading a book, or crocheting!

A Year To Grow

A Year to Grow is a project in the Hudson, QC and Ottawa, ON that tackles issues of food insecurity and climate change. This at-home solution aims to increase community members’ knowledge about growing food year-round in their homes; breaking barriers to healthy, nutritious food and empowering people to become actors in their local food systems.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

A Year to Grow is a two-part, community-based project involving the creation of social media content to support people in deconstructing sustainable agricultural practices into digestible pieces to encourage them to grow food at home. This is paired with a program to increase accessibility to people looking to grow at home in the winter!

      Project Impact

Ultimately, by deconstructing feminist agroecological concepts and encouraging people to grow in their homes, there will be a increased feeling of community empowerment and responsibility for their food system. This mindset shift in turn increases social, environmental and financial sustainability.

      Project Mission

Create educational content and a winter growing program to encourage people to follow the principles of feminist agroecology in both Hudson, QC and Ottawa, ON
