SHIELD: Skincare Health Initiative for Equitable Access in Radiation Dermcare

SHIELD – Skincare Health Initiative for Equitable Access in Radiation Dermcare addresses gaps in supportive care for patients undergoing radiation therapy by improving access to essential skincare products. Developed in response to firsthand clinical experience, the project reduces financial barriers that can prevent patients from managing radiation-related skin toxicity. By partnering with healthcare teams, SHIELD promotes equitable, patient-centred care that enhances comfort, dignity, and treatment experience.

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

SHIELD provides eligible radiation patients with essential skincare products through coordinated distribution with healthcare teams. The project includes patient outreach, product provision, and feedback collection to monitor impact. Activities run until August 15, 2026, ensuring timely support and evaluation of patient outcomes throughout the program.

      Project Impact

SHIELD improves patient well-being by reducing financial barriers to essential skincare during radiation therapy. It enhances comfort, prevents treatment-related skin complications, and supports patient dignity. By addressing an overlooked gap in care, the project fosters more equitable, patient-centred treatment experiences and informs future initiatives to strengthen supportive care in oncology settings.

      Project Mission

SHIELD’s mission is to ensure equitable access to essential skincare for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Its goals are to reduce financial barriers, improve patient comfort and skin health, and empower healthcare teams to provide comprehensive, supportive care. The project strives to create sustainable solutions that enhance dignity and quality of life during treatment.
