Sandeep Singh
Sandeep is a first-year MPH student at the University of Alberta. From a young age, he witnessed firsthand the systemic barriers faced by immigrants and other marginalized communities. His lived experiences led to his involvement in various initiatives addressing the lack of culturally sensitive healthcare. Sandeep is an Outreach Volunteer at the TeamSOUDA, a grassroots organization providing resources and training on overdose prevention in Punjabi, Hindi, and English. Additionally, he is involved with Volentia Translation, an organization providing low-barrier language translation and interpretation services to enhance equitable access to healthcare services and increase diversity in clinical research. As a researcher and aspiring physician, Sandeep is committed to bridging cultural and linguistic gaps to advance health equity for underserved communities.
Healthcare Language Database: Enhancing Linguistic Accessibility in Care
This project will lay the groundwork for a multilingual, searchable digital database of healthcare terms while developing accompanying resources that support linguistically inclusive care. These will include printed terminology sheets, downloadable PDFs, and accessible social media content (i.e. Social media word of the week posts in multiple languages). Codeveloped with Volentia Translation's volunteers and healthcare providers, the internal prototype will be user-tested and published through Volentia’s website as part of a longer-term initiative.

Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
By October, finalize the design and structure of a multilingual healthcare terminology database. From November to December, translate and peer-review 5,000 terms across 20 languages, and produce engagement materials such as printed terminology sheets, downloadable PDFs, and multilingual social-media posts.
Project Impact
The project will impact marginalized populations, particularly those that have limited English proficiency. It has the potential to benefit healthcare providers in delivering culturally competent care and to make health resources more accessible.
Project Mission
To advance health equity by eliminating language barriers in healthcare through the development of multilingual, accessible, and culturally relevant resources for interpreters, healthcare providers, and communities. This will be done by creating a centralized healthcare terminology database and a set of practical tools that support clear, inclusive communication in care settings.
Project Team
The project team consists of volunteers that are experienced in healthcare interpretation and translation.
