Ryme Lahcene
My name is Ryme Lahcene. I’m a youth worker and the founder of Takeover Skateboarding, a movement centered around BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and 2S communities. I’m Amazigh and I live in Vancouver, where I create safe spaces for marginalized youth to explore skateboarding, art, and their identities with joy and confidence. I work in schools with immigrant and refugee youth, focusing on inclusion, community care, and equitable access to recreation. Passionate about travel, cycling, and adventure, I believe in the power of creativity and play as tools for both personal and collective transformation.
Skate meetup for BIPOCS
This summer, Takeover Skateboarding is hosting inclusive skate sessions for BIPOC and queer youth in Vancouver. The goal is to offer a safe space where they can connect with their new environment, build confidence, and have fun through skateboarding. Each session combines skill development, games, and moments of sharing. The project aims to support integration, break isolation, and encourage self-expression in a caring, accessible environment that reflects their realities.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
The project takes place every Saturday throughout the summer with outdoor skate sessions open to young BIPOC and queer participants. Each meeting includes free skating time, a guided lesson, and a group sharing moment to encourage learning, integration, and enjoyment.
Project Impact
The project promotes social inclusion, well-being, and self-confidence among newly arrived youth. Through skateboarding and community, participants break isolation, build connections, and make the new environment their own in a positive, playful, and empowering way.
Project Mission
The project’s mission is to provide a safe and inclusive space where marginalized youth can thrive through skateboarding. By emphasizing fun, mutual support, and self-expression, the project aims to break isolation, foster inclusion, and strengthen each participant’s confidence and sense of empowerment.
Project Team
The Takeover team is made up of young BIPOC and queer folks who share a passion for skateboarding, art, and social justice. Drawing on their lived experience and community knowledge, they create safe, inclusive, and joyful spaces where marginalized youth can learn, express themselves, and feel like they belong.
