Robyn Solland

Robyn (she/her) was born and raised in Kelowna, experiencing the Okanagan through the outdoors. Outside among the rocks and trees, she feels grounded. She loves any outdoor adrenaline sport, including canyoning, ice climbing and rock climbing. Her goal in her professional life is to pursue opportunities that fulfill her. She accomplishes this working as a Canyoning Guide in the summer and teaching French Immersion in the winter. When not working or exploring, her time is largely spent volunteering to create opportunities for others to experience and connect with the outdoors through sport.

Rock On Collective’s “Equitable Outdoors”

Rock On Collective facilitates rock climbing mentorship and educational events that promote land stewardship, competency building, and strong community connections. These programs increase access to meaningful outdoor recreation and foster equity and belonging for people ages 19+ belonging to an equity-deserving group. This includes gender-diverse identities, women, newcomers/immigrants, racialized identities, low-income, 2SLGBTQIA+, neurodiverse and persons with disability. Our vision is an inclusive outdoor community in which everyone is empowered to explore and grow as their authentic selves.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

      1. Our Climbing Mentorship Program aims to cultivate a space of belonging, respect and community for equity-deserving genders through peer-to-peer learning. 2. Equitable Outdoors equips IBPOC and Newcomers with knowledge to recreate meaningfully on syilx territory. It aims to highlight syilx ways of knowing and acknowledge our individual role in outdoor recreation.

      Project Team

Our team of seven came together to help break down barriers in the outdoors and change the narrative of what it means to be a climber- a sport that has historically been dominated by masculinity and shaped by boldness, risk-taking and a “conquering the mountains” mindset.
