Ria Sidhu

My name is Ria Sidhu, and I am going into my fourth year of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University). In 2023, I co-founded Frugal Radio, a 24/7 community radio station based out of Toronto, Ontario. As a student and community leader in Toronto, I am passionate about creating spaces where individuals can come together to bond, feel heard and supported. I enjoy working closely with my colleagues, peers, faculty, and local organizations to organize programming such as events and workshops that meet the interests and needs of the people around me. I am someone who likes creating change rather than waiting for it.

Frugal Radio

Frugal Radio is a 24/7 community radio station broadcasting live from Toronto, Ontario. Founded by two creatives, Kelvin and Ria aim to provide a space for people to tell their story, showcase their creativity (through art, talent, etc), and tune in for news, politics, and other local information. About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

    When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

      While aiming to be a platform for information, creativity, storytelling, and more, the team at Frugal Radio aims to create a space where youth can learn about everything from pre-production to post-production when it comes to recording podcast episodes or going live on the live link station.

      Project Impact

      By planning live and pre-recorded programming and episodes for our segments, we can grow our audience from individuals who want to tune in and engage with our content to those who like to listen/watch (and re-watch) on their own schedules. This way, we can impact more people and have a bigger reach on our audience.

      Project Mission

      At Frugal Radio, our mission is to uplift and amplify the voices of aspiring broadcasters from underrepresented communities through education, workshops, and local support. We aim to provide programming, hands-on learning, and broadcast opportunities for individuals to tell their stories, learn how to use audio and podcasting equipment and engage with the media and broadcast world.
