MacKenzie Curwen Strachan
After being diagnosed with a bleeding disorder and iron deficiency at the age of 15, MacKenzie's passion for community service was ignited, becoming an integral part of her healing journey. As an active member of her school’s mental health advocacy team, MacKenzie has led impactful projects like implementing classroom wellness kits, stress education programs, and organizing mental health weeks. Notably, she took pride in spearheading the establishment of a Calm Room; an inviting and nurturing space we provided at a local high school.
Iron-ing out the Future Food & Health
Iron-ing out the Future (IOTF) is a health and nutrition education program designed to address iron deficiency among university students. The program focuses on raising awareness of this issue, providing accessible blood testing services, and offering iron-enriched options in campus dining halls. These interventions seek to reduce undiagnosed cases of iron deficiency, particularly in women and youth.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
- Multi-barrier populations
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
- SDG 3: Good health and Well-being
- SDG 4: Quality education
- SDG 10: Reduced inequalities
How the project works
IOTF launched an iron education social media campaign, partnering with Mount Allison (MtA) wellness organizations. We were able to spread information to students regarding an iron rich nutrition. Students learned more about their role in their health and what they can do to stay healthy.
Project Impact
By addressing iron-deficiency among students, IOTF positively impacts their well-being, academic performance, and quality of life. Fatigue, weakness, and irritability are among a few of the symptoms commonly associated with iron imbalance and can often hinder success. Empowering students with iron regulation tools, IOTF promotes improved physical and mental wellness, and removes barriers to their academic achievements.
Project Mission
Through the IOTF initiative, students will feel confident in their knowledge of iron in the body. They will be able to regularly incorporate iron in their diet through accessible on-campus options and can seek help when identifying signs of deficiency. Overall, IOTF will help students cultivate lasting practices to maintain iron health and prepare them to advocate for their well-being.
Project Team
The IOTF team is made up of several Mount Allison University students and staff members.
