Building the Case: Establishing a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office in the Northwest Territories

Building the Case: Establishing a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office (Advocate) in the Northwest Territories is a project that will build momentum for the creation of a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office in the Northwest Territories by centring youth voices, engaging the public, and working with community partners to produce a collaborative, community-backed proposal for the establishment of this Office. The Advocate is an independent officer tasked with ensuring that the rights, interests, and viewpoints of children and youth are considered in decisions affecting their well-being. The Advocate engages in both individual and systemic advocacy.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

Our project will centre youth voices, host public engagement sessions, and collaborate with community partners to develop a proposal for a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office in the NWT. Activities will take place over 8 months, culminating in a community-backed plan for systemic change.

      Project Impact

A successful project would result in a strong, community-backed case for establishing a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office in the Northwest Territories. This would give children and youth an independent voice, ensure greater accountability in government services, and create systemic changes that improve supports and outcomes for young people across the territory.

      Project Mission

To build momentum for the creation of a Child and Youth Advocate’s Office in the Northwest Territories by centring youth voices, engaging the public, and working with community partners to produce a collaborative, community-backed proposal for the establishment of this Office which will lead to important systemic change.

      Project Team

The project team is small and consists of various people invested in the well-being of children and youth in the Northwest Territories.
