Katria Phothong McKinnon

Katria Phothong-McKinnon is a Thai-Canadian interdisciplinary artist, designer, curator, community organizer and dancer from Calgary, Alberta. Her work as a community organizer is grounded in preserving the history, integrity, and lineage of the cultures she grew up in with a strong emphasis on education and accountability to their roots. Having learned from pioneers, originators and trailblazers of Street and Club Dance and Ballroom culture, she is committed to passing down knowledge and ensuring these forms continue to thrive for future generations to come, as they are vital spaces for resistance, joy and collective survival. Co-Founding Vogue YYC in 2018 in Calgary, she has played a key role in cultivating and building a self-sustaining community through balls, workshops and cultural programming. With success in this area, her main goal in her community organizing is a goal of "Longevity", a bigger picture that will continue beyond her years, providing respective communities the tools required to keep themselves thriving and cared for.

Longevity x Thrice as Nice Workshops

Longevity x Thrice as Nice Workshops is a community-driven workshop series supporting the return of local Vancouver event, Thrice as Nice, a 3v3 Street Dance Battle. The project provides educational sessions led by visiting artists, centering history, foundations, and cultural context alongside movement training, paired with an entire weekend of battles and community gatherings. It aims to deepen knowledge, strengthen connections, support the continued growth of Street and Club dance cultures and communities, and assist local organizers and existing events in the Vancouver community.

      Project Impact

This project centres education by ensuring participants engage with the history and cultural context of Street and Club dance cultures alongside movement training. By bringing out of town guests directly to the community, it supports accurate cultural transmission, strengthens understanding, and equips community members with the tools to continue these practices with integrity and respect.

      Project Mission

This project aims to support Street and Club dance communities through education, cultural preservation and knowledge-sharing. By centering history, lineage, and context alongside movement, it seeks to strengthen understanding, build connections, and ensure these cultures are sustained with integrity across generations.
