Kaitlin Alexa Cullen
Aanii! My name is Kaitlin Cullen and I am from Pine Creek First Nation, currently living in Nova Scotia. I have (mostly) been learning and practicing my art on my own terms. I have been putting my work out into the world to share my story. Through the act of creating, art has helped me escape my addiction to weed and cope with the waves of grief. I am honouring all my relations in the process of connecting to my roots. I am sharing my own thoughts, feelings, and love into every art piece I create, while also carrying out a message of hope. I am an extension of my mom's spirit, and living out my dreams, despite the challenges I have faced in the past. I know I put my heart into my work as an artist, youth, and community member. So with trust in my sobriety and my story, I know I can continue to be a good role model for my community
Moccasin Making Workshops
This project will help Indigenous Peoples in Nova Scotia ages 13-30+ to engage with their culture and create in a form of compassion for themselves or others with good thoughts going into their art. By creating these Moccasin Making Workshops, participants will create a pair of moccasins either to give away to a loved one, or wear with pride for themselves.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
I will complete this program by the end of September 2025, with three phases: trial phase (small group to test teaching methods and timeframe), public phase (try outreaching to teach these workshops to a public sign up group), and bringing workshops to at least three groups or communities. Each program will include 6-10 participants and run with each different age groups of: youth (ages 13-18 or 19-30) or adults (ages 30+).
Project Impact
These opportunities will allow more Indigenous peoples to collaborate and learn with others and express their creativity in a freeing way.
Project Mission
By providing a safe and calm space to create, participants can explore their culture and practice their art in an empowering way, without judgment.
Project Team
This team honours collaboration, learning, accountability, and upholds this process of reclaimation.
