Harlaj Kaur
My name is Harlaj Kaur. I am pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biology at UBC, and I am going into my fourth year. I have been volunteering in my community for several years, but I wanted to become more involved and give back, which is one of the main reasons why I decided to apply for this program. I strongly believe in teamwork and believe that the most successful teams are the most unified. My project focuses on working alongside youth to empower and inspire their learnings in the scientific field. The youth will have chances to complete experiments which are not always taught in schools, in order to challenge and strengthen their understandings.
Camp DNA
Camp DNA is a camp for students between the ages of 8-13 to attend, and get knowledge on several scientific aspects. It involves learnings from fields such as Medicine, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Camp DNA is free of cost for anyone that would like to attend, and everyone attending will be provided with snacks and meals throughout the day. There will be two camps, one will be held in fall, while the other in winter for students to attend.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
Camp DNA will be held twice, once in September, and the other in January. In both camps, students will be able to perform experiments, get knowledge, as well compete with each other in teams to showcase their own mini projects. Each camp will be for approximately 6-7 hours, including lunch.
Project Impact
My project’s impact will be associated with how many students we inspire to pursue a career in science or how many new students become interested in science. This project will focus on enhancing the critical thinking skills of students, as well as teaching them skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication to ensure their success in the future.
Project Mission
My project’s goal is to inspire the youth of my community by showcasing how versatile science is. There are other camps which focus on similar topics; however, they charge a lot of money. Camp DNA will not be charging any fees, to ensure everyone that wants to learn, will be able to learn, without having to worry about the costs.
Project Team
I will be hiring 2-3 volunteers to help facilitate each camp.
