Diane Ortiz MacLeod
Lifelong supporter of my community, most notably, 8 year volunteer founder of art programming at a local farm co-operative. In my work life, I've been supporting organizations in responsible AI strategy with 5 years experience in the tech industry. Added policy background with experience researching, advising, and reporting with government.
Digital Ancestors: Mortality, Memory, Machine
Digital Ancestors: Mortality, Memory, Machine brings together a multidisciplinary team of artists and responsible AI experts to explore the coexistence of human, nature, and technology. Through a series of experimental co-creations, the project documents how generative AI tools can support an artist’s creative practice, focusing on nature, mortality, and memory. The results: artworks, reflections, and tools culminating in (1) a public gallery, (2) an open framework for other artists to lead their own experiments, and (3) reports and talks aimed at supporting policy, governance, and open source development in the arts.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
This six-month project explores how artists can co-create with AI through personal, value-driven experiments. Outcomes include a public gallery, open framework, and policy reports. Focus areas include data privacy, creative control, and digital legacy. The team will also engage with conferences and arts organizations to share findings and spark dialogue.
Project Impact
Through a gallery, open framework, and reports, this project aims to reach over 1000 people across Canada in major cities and rural communities both in-person and digitally. Team leads plan to to share their findings further by speaking at interdisciplinary conferences, and publishing in blogs and papers.
Project Mission
Artificial intelligence is disrupting industries at scale, with many unknowns as to what it means for the creative industry. We approach this with a keen eye for responsible AI practices and deep commitment to preserving traditional artistic integrity. Our mission is to lead creative R&D experiments in order to provide an open framework for artists, policy makers, and AI developers to engage collaboratively in this space and support artist-centered technology.
Project Team
Our project stakeholders are artists, AI developer, and researchers. Our team is comprised of individuals representing each of these groups. They will help facilitate conversations within and between these groups. A common goal among them is to demystify AI for the general public and artists in a way that makes the tech accessible, to encourage more critical conversations around AI and art.
