Clara-Marie Nowicki
My name is Clara-Marie and I live in Vancouver. I care deeply about the neighbourhood I live in, which is what lead me to implementing a community fridge to mitigate food waste and food insecurity. I am also a youth sexual health educator, a student of sexuality studies at the University of British Columbia and a doula in training at Douglas College. With these endeavours, I am to support the health and wellness of my community.
Community Fridge in the Grandview Woodland Neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC
The Grandview-Woodland community fridge project aims to support the community through supplying fresh, free food donated by grocery stores and local businesses. Through this initiative, the community fridge will also mitigate food waste. Neighbours will be able to contribute their efforts through volunteering with the project and by gathering at community events.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
We did a public survey in December, 2025. Meanwhile, we reached out to community members and organizations in the field of food scarcity. After receiving positive feedback and volunteers from the survey we organized a list of volunteers in February. We are now securing the location and aim to build the fridge by May.
Project Impact
With this project we will create a community of neighbours eager to help and support each other through volunteering and donation. We will reduce food waste impact through the food rescue program and we will support people in need of fresh food for free. This project will also raise awareness around food scarcity and waste.
Project Mission
We aim to provide fresh, accessible food to community members in need, reduce food waste and spread awareness about food scarcity in our neighbourhood. We aim to build and strengthen our local community through mutual aid.
Project Team
We are a team of two project leaders and have a group of volunteers and community supporters
