Charles Chu

Charles has a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) degree from Queen's University. He is passionate about youth empowerment and equitable access to health and education. He is actively involved in teaching and program development, with a particular focus on supporting newcomer populations in Canada. He helped launch BioSpecs in 2023, a summer STEM camp for immigrant, refugee, and international students in the Greater Toronto Area, which helped students explore their interests and inspire them to pursue a career in health sciences, and now he is working to scale this initiative across Canada. As a senior board member at PuMP, he also helps to plan and oversee initiatives across Canada, aiming to connect students to opportunities in STEM.

PuMP+: A Multi-Provincial STEM Fair

Prospective Medical Professionals (PuMP) is a registered charity that hopes to ensure opportunities in STEM are accessible to students of all backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on the health sciences fields. We seek to foster partnerships and collaborations with students, professionals, and organizations or institutions who could provide opportunities in these areas. PuMP+ is a multi-provincial STEM fair that will be held across all 4 of PuMP’s branches; Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Calgary!

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

After securing accessible venue locations, we will begin outreach to STEM organizations/institutions and students/professionals willing to speak about their journey into health sciences fields. We will then promote our PuMP+ to community organizations, schools, and parents. Continuous engagement with community partners/collaborators will ensure smooth event delivery.

      Project Impact

PuMP was established in 2018, and became a registered charity in 2023. Since its founding, we have developed over 50 projects, engaged over 700 volunteers, and reached 100,000+ individuals across Canada. WIth this year’s PuMP+, we seek to diversify our reach and to build a brighter future for students!

      Project Mission

We are Prospective Medical Professionals (PuMP), a charity organization that works to improve the transparency and accessibility of opportunities, education, and mentorship in the field of health sciences—for all students, while equitably supporting those who are underrepresented or underserved in this field.

      Project Team

At PuMP, we have students working under 4 branches: Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Calgary!
