Ayan Ahmed
My name is Ayan Ahmed and I have been involved in several community initiatives over the last 6-7 years, and I am excited to bring our Stronger Roots initiative to life with the support of the Sprout Fellowship.
Stronger Roots
Stronger Roots helps Somali youth in Ottawa reconnect with their culture and with each other through educational workshops and community service. Through educational programming, social events, networking and volunteer opportunities, we aim to rekindle our community's heartbeat.
About this Project
Communities Served
My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.
How the project works
The project will be taking place over a period of 6 months, where we will be organizing 6 workshops based on different cultural themes that will help us explore and discuss several of our cultural values and norms and see which ones can help us form a stronger community and which we have to adapt.
Project Impact
This initiative aims to create a strengthened identity for our community as a whole, but also for each of us as individuals. We often feel insecure and out of place due to our lack of connection with our homeland and feel out of place in Canada due not being from the majority groups. We want to create a sense of dignity and unity.
Project Mission
Helping youth feel proud of their identities and feel connected as a community.
