Variable Athletics: Community Basketball Program

Variable Athletics: Community Basketball Program delivers accessible, year-round basketball through V League and weekly men’s and women’s drop-in sessions in Toronto’s Downtown East. The program creates safe, structured spaces where participants can stay active, build connections, and engage in consistent recreation. V League offers organized, competitive play, while drop-in sessions provide flexible access for all skill levels. By reducing financial and social barriers, the program strengthens community ties, promotes well-being, and ensures reliable opportunities for individuals to participate in sport.

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

The program runs year-round through weekly drop-in basketball sessions for men and women from September to June, alongside an 8-week V League season from July to August. Activities include organized gameplay, team balancing, attendance tracking, and community engagement through consistent, low-barrier access to basketball.

      Project Impact

The program increases access to safe, affordable basketball for underserved community members, leading to consistent physical activity and stronger social connections. It builds a sense of belonging, particularly for men and women who may face barriers to participation, while creating reliable weekly spaces that support community engagement and overall well-being.

      Project Mission

It aims to reduce barriers to participation, create safe and consistent spaces for recreation, and build community connection.
